As a veteran who has served alongside individuals from all walks of life, I've learned the value of unity in diversity. Today, I want to address a challenge that's affecting our nation as profoundly as any foreign threat: the growing political divide that's tearing at the fabric of our society.

The Challenge of Civil Discourse

In recent years, I've found myself increasingly hesitant to engage in political discussions. It's not for lack of opinions or convictions - as veterans, we're no strangers to holding strong beliefs. Rather, it's because I've observed how quickly these conversations can devolve into unproductive, even hostile exchanges.

The ability to engage in healthy, disagreeing dialogue is crucial for learning and maintaining a robust democracy. However, it's becoming evident that many of us struggle to navigate these conversations effectively. This communication breakdown leaves those of us who desire civil discourse feeling silenced, unsure of who we can trust to disagree respectfully.

The Hyperpolarization Trap

What we're left with is a landscape dominated by hyperpolarized voices. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the power of diverse teams working towards a common goal, this trend is particularly disheartening. I've come to realize that changing deeply held beliefs or challenging closed minds is often an exercise in futility.

Reflecting on our current political climate, it's hard to find individuals genuinely enthusiastic about our options. Too often, support for one candidate is expressed primarily through criticism of the opposition. This "lesser of two evils" mentality obscures an important truth: both sides often present valid arguments worthy of consideration.

Shifting the Focus: Finding Unity in Agreement

Over the past year, I've adopted a new approach to political discussions, one that draws on the lessons of unit cohesion I learned in the military. Instead of dwelling on our differences, I now focus on areas of agreement. When confronted with polarizing questions, I redirect the conversation with queries like:

"What areas do you think both sides agree on?"

"Which aspects of this issue do you believe you and me can find common ground on?"

This method may not change minds overnight or solve all our nation's problems. However, I believe it's a crucial step towards healing the divide that threatens our national unity. By highlighting our shared values and concerns, we can begin to shift the narrative away from our differences and towards our common goals.

The Power of Common Ground

Finding common ground doesn't mean abandoning our principles or glossing over important disagreements. Instead, it's about creating a foundation of mutual understanding and respect from which we can address our differences constructively. This approach can lead to:

1. Improved Communication: By starting with points of agreement, we create an atmosphere of collaboration rather than confrontation.

2. Reduced Polarization: Focusing on shared concerns helps humanize those with different viewpoints.

3. Increased Problem-Solving: When we identify common goals, we can work together more effectively to find solutions.

4. Strengthened Democracy: A populace that can disagree respectfully and find common ground is essential for a healthy democratic process.

Moving Forward Together

As veterans, we've experienced the strength that comes from unity in diversity. We know that a team's success depends not on everyone thinking alike, but on everyone working together despite their differences. It's time we apply this lesson to our national discourse.

By focusing on our areas of agreement, we can begin to bridge the divides that threaten our nation's unity. This approach won't solve every problem or erase all disagreements. But it can create a more constructive environment for addressing the challenges we face as a nation.

At ValorWell, we understand the importance of finding common ground. Our mission to support veterans' mental health transcends political boundaries, focusing on the shared goal of ensuring the wellbeing of those who've served our nation. We encourage veterans and their families to engage in open, respectful dialogues about mental health, fostering a community of support that values diverse perspectives while working towards common objectives.

Let's commit to seeking out and nurturing the common ground that unites us. It's through this unity, forged in our shared experiences and values, that we can truly honor the principles of democracy and service that we, as veterans, have sworn to uphold.
